"Supporting Caregivers in STEM" Webinar with NASEM

WEPAN is partnering with NASEM to discuss their report "Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM," on Wednesday, October 16 at 1pm ET.

The report describes the ways in which the labor and contributions of caregivers are often invisible and undervalued, with a specific focus on the academic STEMM ecosystem, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, resident physicians and other trainees, tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty, staff, and researchers.

This report reviews policies and practices that support caregivers, locally and nationally, and describes best practices in policy implementation and design.

Apply for Travel Grants to the 2025 ADVANCE EiSCC

Travel grants are intended to financially support faculty, administrators, and employees in attending the 2025 ADVANCE EiSCC so that they can engage in discussion, networking, and resource exchange centered on advancing intersectional gender equity in the STEM academy. In an intentional effort to support grantees who are often underfunded and excluded from such spaces, selection criteria will prioritize applicants who:

  • are faculty, administrators, or employees from community and technical colleges, minority-serving institutions, or non-academic STEM equity focused organizations,
  • have little or no travel funding,
  • have not attended a national ADVANCE PI meeting before,
  • are engaged in work that advances intersectional gender equity in academic STEM, and/or have knowledge, skills, wisdom, inspiration, and/or aspiration gained from lived experiences related to intersectional gender equity in STEM.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will close on October 24, 2024 at 5pm ET. Awardees will be notified by October 31, 2024.

Each travel grant will cover transportation, meals, lodging, registration, and relevant travel expenses. Apply for travel funding here.

Proposals Open for the 2025 ADVANCE EiSCC

Proposals are now open for the 2025 ADVANCE Equity in STEM Community Convening (ADVANCE EiSCC).

Since 2019, the NSF-funded ADVANCE EiSCC has served as the convening for NSF ADVANCE grantees in a format that facilitates engagement with change agents within and beyond the NSF ADVANCE community. The ADVANCE EiSCC brings together a variety of change makers from higher education, professional societies, industry, government, and non-profits in an engaged exchange of knowledge, resources, and support to drive systemic change in STEM.

The 2025 ADVANCE EiSCC will take place June 1-4, 2025 at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Attendees have an opportunity to share new research findings and exchange resources; brainstorm strategies; collaborate in novel ways; learn about avenues for funding; and demonstrate effective programs and interventions for greater collective impact.

In lieu of traditional text-based abstracts, only visual abstracts will be accepted. Accessible content is encouraged. There are several types of sessions:

  • Poster Showcase: Present an innovative poster about your equity in stem work
  • High 5 Talks: Challenge yourself to outline the highlights of your work – in just five minutes
  • Experience Reports: Share findings and lessons learned from your well-developed and/or later-stage projects
  • Early-Stage Innovations: Gain community feedback and input on new projects or works-in-progress
  • Symposia: Collaborate with multiple presenters on a panel discussion about your respective work
  • Pre-Conference Workshops: Lead an interactive session on critical topics in a 2-hour workshop before the conference kicks off

Read more about the session types and the submission process at https://www.equityinstem.org/eiscc/call-for-proposals. Proposals close December 16, 2024. Acceptance notifications and session assignments will be distributed on February 7, 2025.

Participants whose proposals are accepted are required to register for and attend the 2025 ADVANCE EiSCC.  If you have questions, please contact the ARC Network at arc@equityinstem.org.

"Linking intersectional invisibility and hypervisibility to experiences of microaggressions among graduate women of color in STEM" by K. Wilkins-Yel, J. Hyman, & N. Zounlome

"Given their intersecting identities as both women and people of color within STEM discourses that have been historically shaped to respond to one or the other, women of color are invisible within both (Crenshaw, 1991). These experiences of intersectional invisibility increase the likelihood of being scrutinized, isolated, and marginalized by the dominant group. Thus, exacerbating the chilly STEM climate. Using a nationwide sample of 176 participants, the current study examined microaggressions as an avenue through which women of color are rendered simultaneously invisible and hypervisible in STEM fields. Further, our study explored recommendations for addressing such experiences of microaggressions and intersectional invisibility."

"Role of Professional Societies on Increasing Indigenous Peoples’ Participation and Leadership in STEMM" by J. Ingram, A. Castagno, R. Camplain, & D. Blackhorse

"Indigenous people are the most underrepresented racial/ethnic group in STEMM in the United States . . . One potential reason for lower participation in STEMM programs and professions by Indigenous people that has generally gone unexplored relates to unique cultural and spiritual factors that could deter Indigenous people from STEMM fields. Our research investigates the range and variation of cultural/spiritual/ethical practical issues that may be affecting Indigenous people’s success in STEMM. Our research provides valuable insights for policy and practices within higher education institutions and industry to provide flexible pathways for Indigenous people to reduce or eliminate barriers related to culturally- and spiritually-informed issues."
